Empower Illinois and Tax Credit Scholarship - Information attached
On Tuesday, January 15th, the Illinois Invest in Kids Program will open the online application process for scholarships to the local area Catholic schools. Qualified families may receive a full or partial scholarship to Catholic schools by completing a simple application process through the Empower Illinois website. The application requires a two-step process. First, visit the Empower Illinois Website beginning Tuesday January 15, at 7:00 p.m CT. to reserve your place in line. You will complete a brief online form containing parent name, contact information and child’s name. This will time stamp your application.
After reserving your place in line, you can access the application through your student portal on Friday, January 18. You will receive instructions by email about setting up your student portal after your reservation has been completed. Empower Illinois  will begin awarding scholarships on January 28. Scholarship awards are subject to the availability of funds at your school of choice, however we recommend you submit your application before January 28 to increase your  chances of receiving a scholarship. Some helpful application reminders are as follows:
  • Part one of the application will be available at on  January 15, 2019 at 7 p.m.
  • Families will receive an email to access part two of the application on January 18, 2019 through their new portal on empowerXchange.
  • Everyone must reapply, including those who received a scholarship for the 2018-2019 school year and those currently on the waitlist.
  • Families are encouraged to complete part two before January 28, 2019 for the best chance of receiving a scholarship. If a family does not submit their application before January 28, another applicant may receive a scholarship before them, even if the family has reserved a place in line in front of them.
For more detailed information about the process, please see the Empower Illinois 2019 attachment to this Dialogue.

Daily schedule of events attached to this Dialogue

Catholic Schools Week is almost upon us! Beginning with the 9:30 Mass on Sunday, January 27th, we will be celebrating different areas of Catholic School life. Sunday we will celebrate our parish. Monday we will celebrate our community. Tuesday we will celebrate our students. Wednesday we celebrate our faculty, staff, and volunteers. Thursday we will celebrate vocations. On Friday we will celebrate our grandparents and special friends in our lives. Please see a detailed schedule of events attached to this week's Dialogue.  We are looking forward to a faith-filled fun week!

Free T-shirt for every student! (Order form attached)
This year during Catholic Schools Week we will be celebrating many different things. On one of the days we will be celebrating our students! This year we are very fortunate that our Home and School Association is going to be giving each student in our school a St. Catherine's t-shirt. There is no cost to you. All we ask is that you indicate what size t-shirt your child would like. This order form is due back no later than Monday, January 14th so  that we can place our order in time. Order forms were sent home with every student on Wednesday so please check your child's backpack. Please submit a separate form for each of your children.
Birthday Boxes for FISH Food Pantry - flyer attached
NJHS is once again sponsoring a school wide service project to create birthday boxes for the F.I.S.H. food pantry. Students will be making birthday cards and decorating birthday boxes during art classes. The birthday boxes will be filled and delivered the following week. Each grade has been assigned a special part for this project. If everyone participates we hope to be able to make some birthdays a little more special for people that visit the food pantry. Please see the attached flyer to see what your child is being asked to donate for this project. Every classroom will help in assembling the birthday boxes during Catholic Schools Week. Please send these items to school no later than Wednesday, January 23. Thank you!
Grandparents and Special Friends' Day - Friday, February 1st
We are having a special celebration to recognize Grandparents and older adults who are very special people! Students are encouraged to invite their grandparents or a special person in their life to celebrate mass with us and attend other activities on Friday, February 1st from 8:45 - 11:30 am. Mass will begin promptly at 9:00 AM. This special day will give the children a chance to showcase their school day with someone who may not have been here before. The event is on a half day of school and children can be dismissed with their grandparents or per normal dismissal routines.  This special day is very well attended so reservations are required. RSVP forms for this event were sent home with students yesterday. Please make sure to check your child's backpack for the form. RSVP's are due back to school by January 25th.  Any parents interested in helping with check in or serving refreshments should please contact Susan Holland.
Virtue for the month of January: Humility
As we head back to school this month, our students will be focusing on the Virtue of Humility. The Catholic dictionary defines humility as the  moral virtue that keeps a person from reaching beyond himself. It is the virtue that restrains the unruly desire for personal greatness and leads people to an orderly love of themselves based on a true appreciation of their position with respect to God and their neighbors. Religious humility recognizes one's total dependence on God; moral humility recognizes one's human equality with others. Yet humility is not only opposed to pride; it is also opposed to immoderate self-abjection, which would fail to recognize God's gifts and use them according to his will.
A simpler definition of humility for children is that humility is the quality of being humble, putting the needs of another person before your own, and thinking of others before yourself. Some ways that we can help our children practice the virtue of humility are to have them speak less and become better listeners to the people around them, give other people credit, admit when they are wrong, be willing to go last, ask for advice, praise others, and give compliments. Humility is not about showing off or constantly being recognized. It is the action of doing things in a way to honor God and make a difference in the lives of others without seeking reward.
Many Gifts, One Nation: A Day of Giving to Catholic Schools
On Tuesday, January 29th, our school will be taking part in a National Campaign called, Many Gifts, One Nation: A Day of Giving to Catholic Schools. A separate letter outlining this initiative will be emailed to families next week with more specifics about this program.
