Virtue for the month of November: Gratitude
November is a perfect month to focus on the Virtue of Gratitude. By definition, the word gratitude means the quality of being thankful and grateful. In Rachael Hartley's blog dated November 26, 2014 she defines gratitude as "a deep sense of appreciation, something that fills you with joy and emotion. It's more than saying thank you or listing things that you have that others don't. Gratitude should truly move you to the core. When you feel a true sense of gratitude, it changes your actions. You'll treat others with more kindness and empathy, you'll take full advantage of the opportunities and moments you're blessed with in life."
The month of November offers many opportunities to show our gratitude to those around us. For example, Veterans Day is a perfect time to show our gratitude to our servicemen and women and all the first responders in our lives who help to keep us safe. Through daily prayer, we should thank God for the blessings and abundance of mercy and grace He gives us every day. And, as we prepare our homes for Thanksgiving, let us remember to tell our families, friends, and those who have made a difference in our lives just how truly thankful we are for their presence in our lives.  To help engage our children in experiencing gratitude have them start a "Gratitude Journal" in which they write down each night three blessings in their lives. At the end of the month reflect back through the journal to see how God has truly blessed your children and family.

Veterans Wall of Honor
Please help us create a Wall of Honor to help recognize family members and local people in our community who have served in the armed forces. The Wall of Honor will be displayed during the month of November to thank all the servicemen and women who sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy today. Whether the family member is currently serving, is now retired or has passed on, we ask that you please send us a picture with their name and in what branch they served. Pictures can be scanned and emailed to schooloffice@st-cath.net or you can send your photos directly to the school office. Please make sure that any pictures sent to the office are clearly labeled so that we can return them to you. Pictures must be received no later than Wednesday, November 6th. Pictures will be displayed through the month of November. Thank you for your help in honoring our veterans!
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent teacher conferences will take place on Friday, November 8th. There will be NO SCHOOL that day for students. Conferences will be scheduled from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. The Rockford Diocese requires that all parents attend parent teacher conferences in the fall of each school year. If you have a conflict with this day, you may choose to arrange a time just before November 8th to meet with your child’s teacher either before or after school. Students in grades 6-8 should attend the parent teacher conference. If you have younger school age children they can wait in the hallway while you meet with the teacher. Very young children should not be waiting in the hallway or attend the conferences. Please make arrangements for a sitter or another parent to watch younger children while you attend the conference. We look forward to seeing all of you!
Pennies for Pies is Back!!
NJHS  is once again sponsoring the Pennies for Pies  contest in each classroom. The contest begins on Monday, November 4th and will go through Friday, November 15th. Students  are invited to contribute money to the Pennies for Pies containers in their classrooms. All money collected from the contest will go towards purchasing pies for F.I.S.H. Food Pantry. These pies will be included in Thanksgiving dinners for less fortunate families.  The class contributing the most money will get a special dessert at lunch!
Candy for the Troops
Please send to school any extra/unwanted Halloween candy to be donated and shipped to our active duty service members around the world. A bin labeled “Candy for the Troops” will be in the school lobby from Friday, November 1st until Monday, November 18th. Morning Workouts are Back!
Beginning Tuesday, November 5th, we are opening up the gym to 1st-3rd grade students for morning exercise on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Students will be allowed to go into the gym anytime between 8:00 and 8:15. Once in the gym, they will have the privilege to participate in a morning workout. Research shows that physical activity helps the brain prepare for learning. Please  drop your child off in the back of the school and the supervisors will direct your child to the gym. A morning workout will begin once inside the gym. I want to emphasize that this will not be an organized game, it will be an organized & fun time for some morning exercises.  This is a completely optional opportunity for your child to participate in. There will be no changes to your morning student drop off location. The only change will be that once your child arrives to school, s/he will be allowed to go into the gym and begin a morning workout. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me at rustonj@st-cath.net.
