Virtue of the month: Humility
Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less. - Rick Warren
During the month of October our students will be focusing on the Virtue of Humility. The Catholic dictionary defines humility as the moral virtue that keeps a person from reaching beyond himself. It is the virtue that restrains the unruly desire for personal greatness and leads people to an orderly love of themselves based on a true appreciation of their position with respect to God and their neighbors. Religious humility recognizes one's total dependence on God; moral humility recognizes one's human equality with others.
A simpler definition of humility for children is that humility is the quality of being humble, putting the needs of another person before your own, and thinking of others before yourself. Some ways that we can help our children practice the virtue of humility are to have them speak less and become better listeners to the people around them, give other people credit, admit when they are wrong, be willing to go last, ask for advice, praise others, and give compliments. Humility is not about showing off or constantly being recognized. It is the action of doing things in a way to honor God and make a difference in the lives of others without seeking reward.
Check your child's backpack!
School pictures were sent home earlier this week with your child. If you ordered pictures and have not received them, please check your child's backpack! If you are still missing ordered pictures, please contact Van Gogh School Photographers, Inc directly at 847-382-2282, ext. 7. Retakes and fall sports pictures will be taken on Tuesday, October 22nd.   Picture envelopes to order sports pictures will be sent home with students next week. If your child will be retaking their school picture, please have the student bring the picture packet back with them on picture day.
Family Fun Night & Trunk or Treat - RSVP form attached
The St. Catherine's Home and School Association is excited to announce our annual Family Fun Night will take place on Friday, October 25th from 6:30-8:30 pm . School families and staff are all invited to join us for a great time with family and friends. We are planning on a fun evening which includes: costumes, snacks, games, entertainment, and trunk or treating! Pizza and drinks will be available for purchase.
All families with cars participating in the Trunk or Treating will be entered in a raffle to win a frighteningly fabulous gift for the whole family to enjoy.  RSVP forms have been sent home with students and are due back to school by Friday, October 19th. Please see the attached forms for more information.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent teacher conferences will take place on Friday, November 8th this year. We will have conferences from 8:00 AM- 5:00 PM. Sign up will be on Schoolspeak in a few weeks. The Rockford Diocese requires that all parents attend parent teacher conferences in the fall of each school year. If you have a conflict with this day, you may choose to arrange a time just before November 8th to meet with your child’s teacher either before or after school. Students in grades 6-8 should attend the parent teacher conference. Often employers will allow a parent to leave work to attend a parent teacher conference, so please check with your company, if necessary. The teachers look forward to talking with you about your child’s progress on November 8th.
